How prices are set
Color Line and Fjord Line sell the Hirtshals - Kristiansand crossing at dynamic prices: the day of travel, departure, ship, vehicle and when you book all determine the amount, and you see the price of the day in the booking step. The two ferry companies calculate differently, though. Color Line bundles the car and its occupants into packages priced per person, while Fjord Line charges for the vehicle and passengers separately. So the only fair comparison is the total for the same departure.

On this route, the gap between the cheapest departure and a holiday departure is the biggest lever: book early and travel midweek, and you'll pay a fraction of the summer price for the same crossing.
Color Line: packages and seats
Color Line sells the crossing with a car as a package: the price is per person, and the vehicle is included. The car package covers cars up to 5 metres long and 1.95 metres high, the motorhome package vehicles up to 5 metres long and 2.55 metres high for two people; longer or taller vehicles are booked by their actual size. If you book the outward and return trip together, you get a discount on the return.
As the SuperSpeed 1 has no cabins, Color Line sells seats as an extra. Business Class on deck 8 comes with wifi, a locker, coffee, fruit, water and newspapers; Voyager Class on deck 9 has adjustable reclining seats and a child price. Both are optional; a standard seat is included in your ticket.
Fjord Line: ships, cabins and Fjord Club
Fjord Line charges for the vehicle and passengers separately and prices by ship: the catamaran Fjord FSTR has no cabins, while on MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord you can add a cabin if you want one. Give your vehicle length including trailer and roof box; if the measurements are wrong, you'll pay the difference at the terminal.
The Fjord Club is free and credits five per cent of the booking value as points, which you redeem on your next booking. If you travel regularly, sign up before your first booking.
Motorbike, bicycle and on foot
Both ferry companies book motorbikes as a vehicle class of their own. Without a vehicle, you take a foot passenger ticket; a bicycle is registered as a vehicle when you book. How it all works without a car is explained on the On Foot & by Bicycle page.

That changes with the date, departure and vehicle. Fjord Line's cruise ferries and Color Line's SuperSpeed 1 are often close, while the catamaran Fjord FSTR is a separate product. Compare both for your date in the booking above.
